This pavilion for Castle Downs Park is conceived as a landmark building - an object in a field that serves the park's users and provides the space with a strong identity. It presents a series of basic functional spaces while simultaneously creating offerings of various programmatic possibilities. The structure is designed as a massive concrete container wrapped in a thin skin of perforated steel sheeting. During the daytime the building provides opportunities for panoramic viewing, while at night it acts as a park lantern and offers possibilities for cinematic projection.
One of the strongest assets of this park is its vast expanse of open land which provides excellent opportunities for organized field sports and recreation. With the existing requirements for 450+ square metres of storage space we felt that a prudent and economical decision would be to house all the public access base building components at ground level, while stacking the storage spaces above. Having arrived at the decision to make a three-storey building, we then looked for offerings that a building of this type might provide.
The most obvious idea is a high level platform, which provides panoramic viewing opportunities to the sports fields below. This decision also provides the structure with an associated event, and a level of inhabitation that might not otherwise exist.
The second idea is a specific design for cinematic and mixed media viewing and projection on the face of the building. Open-air cinema is a popular and exciting social phenomenon that is usually designed for retroactively. By creating a building skin that caters to projection, and by designing landscaping specifically for this type of event, the pavilion can begin to have a night time use and act as a social hub in Castle Downs Park. As a sort of community landmark it seems that an outdoor cinema would provide a perfect opportunity for film or multi-media projections as the public art component of the project.
Castle Downs Park is a large expanse of open space and requires a building that can provide basic amenities in an environment that sometimes requires refuge from the elements. To this end, the building design has included indoor and outdoor spaces that provide shelter, recycling stations, bicycle racks, and access to drinking water.
As a park lantern - a lit object in a field, we believe that this building can act as a sort of beacon in the landscape. From an urban perspective it is a building that is situated as a place marker in the city. The cinematic component of the building is a simple, economical programmatic infusion that can help build connections to community and place. By creating a building as a light we can construct a safe and highly visible gathering place in the park, and a landmark for the city as a whole.
