How fixed is the Assiniboine River?
Our Warming Hut is a representation of dialog between a city and a river; how did the city change the river, how did the river change the city.
The drawing of the field indicates the way we have modified our landscape and specific compromises as the grid, our measuring and organizing ideal breaks down as it encounters the natural. This drawing is of the reverberations of the Assiniboine. It is a scale drawing of the distortions in the field or distortions in the city on the river banks. Roads, properties and infrastructure often bend far from the river. It is that territory, far from the water source, the places that are lived in, neither grid, nor river bank that epitomizes the dialog.
We use conventional means of representation, maps, GPS and symbols to invite the visitor inside and consider our desire to measure and fix the Assiniboine. The field is laser cut into Warming blackened plate steel and presented as a wrapper. During the day, light projects the field on the interior, changing with the sun and clouds. At night the Hut is illuminated to project the field out. The visitor once inside, can turn off the lights by sitting down, announcing their occupancy, and allowing the view out to the stars.
