Aurora is site-specific response to the Warming Huts v.2012: An Art & Architecture Competition on ice call for shelter for the Assiniboine Credit Union River Trail.
Conceptually, a massive block of ice has been lifted front the frozen water (01, 02) of the Assiniboine. The block has been split (03) and sculpted (04); light, colour and form combine to create sensuous interior, a space of psychological warmth, apart front the cold wintery world of Winnipeg. The play of light across the walls, the soft glow of the translucent blocks and the shifting curves create an ever-changing environment, inspired by the shimmering Aurora.
A painting composed of blocks of organically dyed ice supported by an inner steel structure represent a material system and method of design held in balance by a set of climatic conditions.
lce melts (05), colours run together and the hut becomes a testament to the vagaries of anthropogenic climate change and stands as a record of the passing.
