Every Winnipeg winter sees children piling snow in their yards and carving out from it to create an intimate haven from the outside elements. Carving the inside with hand and shovel to create a layer of snow so thin it fills the interior with a translucent glow from the sun, sometimes going t00 far for an unexpected window to the sky. This project combines the permanence of built shelter with the playfulness of a snow fort. The plywood sheets that are typically used to skin a home are carved out to create an interior space inspired from, and reminiscent of, childhood memories, the exterior glowing ribbed box is the raw material for an unexpected interior discovery, crouching to get through the small entrance, you stand back up within a carved world of form and light, sitting areas and crevices carved out of the wood provide areas for refuge and play.
