Signature
The art(bre) project is a celebration of the tree vegetation that constitutes an emblematic element of the Montcalm district. There, in front of our eyes, often taken for granted in the urban landscape, the tree constitutes here the link between art and the city. It defines the signature of the neighborhood and becomes the tangible manifestation of the vibrant cultural life found there.
Historicity
In the 19th century, the Montcalm district was considered the suburb of Quebec City. It was prized by the aristocracy who moved there to escape the unhealthy conditions of downtown and its dizzying activity. The extensive plant cover and vast spaces gave the area a healthy and relaxing atmosphere. In 1913, the City organized the "Festival of Trees" to encourage citizens to plant trees in a part of the neighbourhood that was devoid of them.
Multiple perceptions
One hundred years later, this symbiosis is as strong as ever. Throughout the seasons, day and night, the tree is always present, but it manifests itself in multiple ways. It frames, conceals, shades, lets us glimpse, filters the light, in short it participates in the poetic reading of urban landscapes.
Manifestations
Two types of interventions are proposed. One is permanent along Grande-Allée, the other is ephemeral within the district.
Linear square
Along Grande-Allée, between avenue Taché and côte Gilmour, the luminous and graphic interventions intensify as the museum pole approaches, defining a square for the new MNBAQ pavilion and a threshold for the rest of the district. This intensification is expressed through a luminous work of variable amplitude and a graphic ground marking of the root type
Artistic constellation
Within the neighborhood, in a random way and according to the seasons, each tree can become the site of an ephemeral artistic intervention. Artists from all over the world are invited to come and express themselves in the spirit of urban land art, respecting the fragile nature of nature and establishing the necessary dialogue between the often hermetic world of art and the daily life of the city. These works, which will have to respect the environment and the integrity of the tree, will become sometimes visual calls in connection with the exhibitions of the museum, sometimes poetic refuges, allowing to refresh oneself. Thus, dispersed, the works become events that accompany the life of the neighborhood manifested by the movement of residents and the evolution of nature.
