INSPIRATION
We are inspired by the sports that the pavilion serves and the representation of this human movement as it engages in the activity. We looked to other forms of art and how they capture movement and express it. Our references are Marcel Duchamp's 'Nude descending a staircase No.2' and Umberto Boccioni's 'Unique Forms of Continuity in Space' and the work of pioneering photographers Eadweard Muybridge and Etienne-Jules Marey. The chronophotography allows static representations of movement that express the fluidity and tension that exists within the action. We were conscious that the building had to be part of the landscape and looked to the structures that have shaped the agrarian development of the province, the grain elevator. We are humbled by what can be achieved with a simple 2x4 and 2x6 and the inherent strength that the cribbed walls provide. We referenced the Ysios winery by Calatrava and the Helsinki zoo look out by Ville Hara as 2 structures that use wood in an innovative way. While the buildings respond to the seasonal activities that they contain we believed that a truly kinetic response to the brief would not be appropriate for the function and setting. The building has to respect our climate and be designed to embrace the challenges of our winter and take advantage of the opportunity that the summer months bring. It should also enable the shoulder seasons to be expanded and provide shelter without necessarily having to occupy enclosed space.
PROCESS & DESIGN
We looked at the sports of Baseball, Football and Soccer and the actions they contained. We then undertook our own chronophotography of the 'throw' the 'kick' and the 'hit' and used these static representations to inform the structural configuration of the proposed building. The mappings were laid on to the site to build on the existing linkages, vistas, access and movement patterns. We then reviewed the program requirements and how the spaces could be categorized and grouped according to function and phase. The result was three distinct buildings that enclosed a public gathering space. The building's extended roof form provides shelter from the elements while it's twisting flexing form evokes the movement of the sports they serve. The main 'throw' pavilion contains the City funded space together with the concession which stands as a focal point to the south entry to the site. The storage rooms are located at the ends of the 'kick' and 'hit' and are punctuated on their inner walls with a series of LED light boxes of varying colours to provide an inner glow to the structure and assist with wayfinding and approaches to the building. Materials are limited to the cribbed construction which is supplemented with internal cast in place concrete walls for wet and high impact areas. The roof is zinc and the primary roof beams are gluelam. The central court provides opportunity for play, relaxation, gathering and education.
