The existing park has a need for an anchor to the sports fields; a need for a park facility building that offers connections and accessibility without turning its back to any side; a need for shelter from the elements; and a need for visibility.
-Building is parted at grade, structuring the site by strengthening and focusing existing movement routes. This also creates areas for team assemblies and gathering spaces for individuals and events.
-Landform is oriented in response to existing parking area and sports fields. This gesture pulls together existing circulation patterns and draws them through the project.
-Berms are oriented towards existing sports fields offering informai raked seating.
-Exposed concrete walls at entry points serve as embossed sig nage surfaces for the building and park.
-The public washrooms and the flrst aid station are located on the ground level and are centralized within the plan for ease of access and equal accessibility from any direction. These more public of at-grade programs are sheltered by the building above and signifled by fully glazed vestibules.
-Change rooms and storage areas for the various sports groups are located at grade with direct entry from the exterior for ease of access. Clerestory glazing allows these spaces to take advantage of natural daylight.
-Mechanical spaces that service the north and south at-grade buildings are located such that they are situated beneath the lantern above to provide direct vertical risers.
- Exterior stairs and berms provide vertical movement to the interior and exterior spaces above.
- The upper building (Iantern) acts as a land mark which is visible throughout the park. From inside 360 degree views are offered over the entire park and its existing sports fields. This building also deflnes a sheltered public space below and provides illumination for exterior public areas.
- The common area / multipurpose room bookends the south end of the upper building and is glazed on three sicles to provide views to the south, east and west overlooking the park. This space can be used for informal occupation and can also be easily isolated for private functions by simply closing doors that separate it from the rest of the building.
- The concession bookends the north end of the upper building and also is glazed on three sides providing views to the north, east and west which overlook the park.
- Roof-top patios create lookouts towards existing sport fields and extend the concession and common area functions outside.
- Daylit parks maintenance offices, sports association offices, the meeting room are located on the upper level overlooking the park. These spaces are centralized in the plan, along with the elevator, washrooms and service room, and are connected to the public spaces through glazed breezeways that connect and unify the upper level.
- Additional trees and vegetation are proposed at both the south-west and northeast entrance points providing additional canopied areas within the public spaces and providing foreground to the project.
