A BUILDING AS THE HUB FOR A COMPLEX PROGRAM AND SITE
The building acts as a staging and orientation platform for the broad constellation of activities and users who occupy the site. With a large central public space that is ac¬cessible from multiple entries, the building encourages interaction and connection between different programs and the surrounding fields. The generously glazed perimeter captures panoramic views of the park and creates a compelling visual relationship to the interior of the building from the outside.
A BUILDING THAT SPATIALLY AND VISUALLY ENGAGES ITS SITE
The building arms reach toward the surrounding playing fields, with wings addressing the fields to the south-west, south-east and north-east. The central location of the pavilion gives focus to the distribution of programs in the park, while its form creates an iconic reference point, as weil as partly-sheltered outdoor spaces on a largely open site. The building is clad in polished stainless steel panels and sealed glazed units. The patterned panels abstractly mir¬ror the surrounding park, its users, and the changing conditions of the days and seasons. The poten¬tial for younger users to visually engage with the reflective cladding will further enhance the animated quality of the facade.
A PLAN FOR FLEXIBLE DEVELOPMENT
The City-funded Phase 1 program is housed in the south-east wing, and is accessed from the existing service road and on-road parking to the south. On its west side, this wing incorporates the principle entrance and the public space that will be the centre of the completed pavilion. The multi-purpose room occupies the south-east part of this wing, and opens to a sheltered patio and panoramic views of the park beyond. The north and west wings house Phase 2 programs: change rooms in the west are organized so users can exit the build¬ing directly to the fields; and storage, offices, additional meeting space, and officiais' change rooms occupy the northerly wing.
A COLOURFUL INTERIOR THAT EVOKES THE ENERGY OF ITS PROGRAM
The interior of the public areas are a bright saturated blue, suffusing the building with colour and making for a backdrop against the activities taking place within them. Multiple skylights will ensure uninterrupted daylight in winter months, while large expanses of vertical glazing will transform the building into a coloured beacon after the sun sets. Materials are selected for their durability: concrete floors with a retro plate finish, public partitions in painted con¬crete, and a stainless steel cladding that is impact-and vandal-proof.
