The initial inspiration for our Pavilion Design was derived from the site itself, and its lack of topographic variety. We imagined a sweeping landscape with two boulders nestled in the terrain, carving out their position and creating a destination within the park that is both subtle and welcoming to the various user groups that live nearby. These two stones, resting within the landscape and sunken into the ground are a foil for the movement and vitality that surrounds them. Both inside and out, there is constant change and interaction as the building occupants inhabit the interior and exterior spaces, utilize the playing fields and travel to and from the park. It is this interaction that creates a vibrant destination within the urban fabric.
Proposed Design
To create a sense of arrival and welcome to the building, the entrance is oriented off an exterior plaza located to the south, accessible to both the playing fields and nearby parking area. This area is sunken below grade to reinforce the arrivai experience as weil as provide a sheltered exterior area to be enjoyed throughout the seasons.
The design layout is inverted in that the entire building is situated a half storey below grade with the main entrance located at this lower level. The building structure is separated into two buildings connected by a large glazed entry vestibule. This separation allows for the possibility of phasing the project as weil as separating the public common areas from the functional programmatic spaces. This allows the portion of the building housing specifie areas (i.e. change rooms, storage, etc.) to be locked off when not in use, creating flexibility and security within the overall design. The Public areas including the proposed concession and common areas are located at the lower level immediately adjacent to the main entrance. 80th have large expanses of glazing to provide natural light and ventilation as weil as both a visual and physical connection to the entry plaza. It is intended that these expanses of glazing cou Id open up in warmer weather, reinforcing the connection between the interior and exterior spaces for the building users.
For the purposes of this presentation, we have designed the program spaces to meet the needs of a phased construction. Should it be determined that the entire project will be built concurrently, we would suggest the relocation of the concession area to the main floor, adjacent to the common area where the maintenance office is currently located. We feel that this location would provide better traffic flow throughout the main floor of the building.
The upper level of the building houses the semi-public areas such as meeting rooms, offices and the officiais' change rooms as weil as mechanical spaces and circulation. Access to the playing fields on the north side of the building has also been provided at this levaI. Locating these functions on the upper level serves a dual purpose: it provides a quieter atmosphere for work and concentration away from the hustle of the main floor while also creating an informai sense of security and supervision for children who stray away from the main public areas. The result is a durable, flexible and useful space that will meet the needs of the buildings' many user groups for years to come regardless of the season.
