The design for the Mill Woods Park Centre is envisioned to be a structure that exudes a sense of community through a neighborhood facility and creates a sense of place by creating an architectural character or composing an archetype that is based on local conditions, user needs and stakeholder participation, by using local resources, available technology and local trades and industries. The design is projected to be simple and transparent, being true to the use of materials and form, reflecting its sincerity in service and responsibility to the community and the environment.
- The proposed building fits within the location boundary as set by the Park and occupies about 24% of the intended site area.
- The City-funded spaces are grouped on the left side with the public washrooms in front to be easily accessible to the park users, while the Multi-purpose area is at the North (rear) adjacent to and with an opening towards the Concession area as required in the program. The Concession area is accessible to a Service entrance at the rear for the delivery of food supplies and materials.
- The User-funded phase is on the right side of the structure and is linked to the City-funded phase through a common hall which could serve as a general waiting area, a gathering space, winter warm-up, public art exhibit space and a solar hall.
- Aside from linking the two phases together, this central Waiting Hall or Lobby links the building to the fields by providing visual access through wide glass walls and by having physical access to the View Deck, which is another design feature, which could be used as an overflow space and an outdoor gathering space or waiting area. This View Deck, being elevated from the ground, has direct and commanding views of the playing fields, while also possibly serving as a great outdoor social space like a community patio with outdoor tables and chairs where people can meet and interact especially during summer and when hosting major events. On large gatherings, the Concession area can serve the crowd on the Lobby and on the View Deck, aside from serving functions or meetings in the Multi-purpose Hall.
- The User-funded phase structure is rotated at an angle to have the Change Rooms access oriented generally towards the playing fields, as per required in the program.
