There is no doubt that disorderly and crowed urban street space forces people to prefer to live in private space, such as private cars, rather than stay in the streets, and the traditional bus station is the accomplice.
We believe that the bus stations as important nodes in the street space. To citizens influenced by the station, It should be able to be an remarkable memory of urban life, like the red phone booths in Paris; To passengers, It should be a relaxed place, so that can protect them from the disorderly and crowed urban street space, experience more privacy and more secure emotional experience. This is why we choose these prototype.
First of all, we will discuss the possibility of bus stations to be a part of private city life of passengers. Bus stations usually serve passengers in definitive areas, at the same time, formed a unique service group divided by the station service area, and became remarkable structures to the passengers gradually. We like to call them the bus station next to "my home" or "my company". when we design the subway station , we may give a special advice by their regional style, and we should design the bus station in the same way.
At the same time, in the boring Home-Office life mode, the station itself represents a daily living experience, it has the potential to represent life attitude and taste of the passengers.
How does the bus station be given the personality of the individual it serves? We hope to increase the participation and attraction of the station through the spontaneous design and voting options of the residents in service area of station. The form of the station may be unoriginal, but be liked. We believe that everyone is glad to improve their own life, but also willing show their life style to "guests".
We chose a most normal site, with no busy roads and crowed stores, which is a useless space near the mall. Far from the busy street, the passengers which come here everyday are lonely, they need a new station.
We use soft rubber as material, as much as possible to be soft and comfortable. It looks like a big sofa in city scale, rather than an inexorability city facility. It can bring personal and architectural private experience, such as lying inside, climbing up, trespassing under it. While the rubber itself has sound absorption performance, can block part of noise from the street.
The jury wished to mention this proposal, based on the excesses of public art which would be put here at the service of the modesty of bus stops. The project is audacious and frank, it is as playful - even ironic - as intriguing.
