REINVENTING OUR RIVERS
Connecting Ecosystems
The proposal seeks to recover the structuring ecosystems of the territory of Quebec by linking them to the public space system, focused on recreation, sport and the improvement of the quality of life of the inhabitants, such as the promotion of conservation of the biodiversity of the flora and fauna, and built heritage, through enjoyment and education, in which rivers will not be a barrier but a space of encounter, transition and connection between neighborhoods, facilities, parks and other natural elements.
There are four main strategies:
1. Continuity and Integration from the Landscape The rivers as structuring axes of the landscape. Promote recovery as the protection of biological corridors as continuous elements and supportive of the territory and the city, forming a green and blue network.
2. Urban Cohesion Improved connectivity, accessibility and sustainable mobility, to and from the green corridor, and consolidation of the existing urban sprawl.
3. Binding and Continuous Civic Space Creation of a binding space that strengthens and integrates water corridors, natural elements, public space, equipment, parks, green areas, tourist circuits and heritage elements, as a means to improve the quality of life and social appropriation of the territory during the four seasons of the year.
4. Reuse of Infrastructure and its Integration into the Green and Blue Structure Take advantage of the existing infrastructures in the area of influence of the rivers to integrate them, including uses that complement the daily activities in the green corridors. Due to the existence of consolidated activities in rivers, the proposal seeks to integrate and strengthen existing activities through the formation of continuous multifunctional natural corridors with specific characteristics of each river, zones and catalytic functions that integrate the landscape and respond to urban dynamics, the environmental dynamics, and the social dynamics.
The aim is to consolidate and strengthen the existing urban fabric by facilitating connections with the neighborhoods and generating transitional zones towards the green-blue corridors in the longitudinal and transverse directions through the articulation with the motorized, public transportation system and means of sustainable mobility, allowing that urban activity flows towards them, optimizing and creating access zones for the use of the existing infrastructure by means of connection elements such as trails, bus stops, parking areas, cycle paths and bridges. This allows to encourage the use as the sense of appropriation of the bodies of water throughout the year through routes that link recreational, tourist, cultural and ecological activities.
