This proposal aims at enhancing the quality of life of the residents living near the water by creating safe and inviting spaces that encourage residents and tourists to use and enjoy. The scheme strives to create a hallmark for each river that awards it its theme and unique identity, without losing the connection between the four rivers. The suggested concepts are guided by establishing a balance between sustainability and the physical characteristics, history of the area, and the guidelines of the City, as to transform, rehabilitate and conserve its rivers banks, and the natural and developed areas that border them. A comprehensive vision for the four rivers is presented to guide the development process.
The Saint Charles river is recommended to be a recreational tourism trail. As for The Beauport river, is recommended to be a recreational trail. In its interest area, the main drive is connecting the linear park and allowing access to the river mouth by pedestrians and cyclists. Based on the site features and the unique landform new activities are proposed as, climbing and mountain cycling. BBQ /picnic areas are suggested to accomplish better exposure to the waterfalls. Moreover, community gardens are suggested to strengthen the community cohesion and provide a place for kids to enjoy the outdoors. Public art and signage can be adopted to point out the places of Beauport heritage sites and remind the locals of the city's history.
As for Cap Rouge river, the proposal emphases on preserving the natural theme in the area while adding facilities as toilets, signage and food vendors to enhance the visitor's experience. In its interest area, the main issue is improving the visual and physical access to the river through adding access points which comprise places for sitting and fishing, and are connected to parking lots and cycling routes. Cap Rough is distinguished by its trestle (Industrial heritage) which is the center of the design proposal, as a multi-functional space is placed to overlook the historic monument, to welcome tourists, educational trip members and to host abroad of seasonal cultural performances and activities.
Finally, Montmorency River is to be a tourism and water activity trail. The selected interest area hosts the Montmorency waterfall which is considered the major tourist attraction in the area. Therefore, the design stresses on generating new parks and trails which serve locals and tourists. Parks can accommodate museums that illustrate the history of the city, camping sites, vendors , facilities ,antique shops, playing grounds and exercising stations. Hiking and watching the wildlife in the area is another significant aspect to be considered. Horse riding can be added to encourage exploring the Cedar groves, in addition to the speleological, nautical and rock climbing activities as to complete the tourist visit. At last, the proposed development plan intends to augment the potentials in the area and seeks to integrate new ideas to connect the rivers an revive its historical background, hopefully to produce a better natural, social and economic environment.
