Four Rivers Completing Quebec City's Green, Heritage, Culture and Promenade Network
City of Quebec has lots of historical, cultural, natural and human assets in good quality throughout the city. Despite of huge potentials, many of assets are dispersed, disconnected and have low accessibility. Thus, if we can connect all the assets to each other and to the four major rivers with additional new places as hubs, then we can have collective network of nature, culture, heritage, events and art at city scale. On those continuous networks, infinite creation and evolution of natural, educational or recreational events can be expected. With the complete network map of it, citizen and visitors can encounter with series of events by just being on the network. In the network, routes of nature, history, heritage, experience, culture, education, sports and event can be created and mixtures among them can create unexpected routes in creative way. It is a dynamic and sustainable way of developing all the areas of the city.
Cap-Rouge : There are lots of historical heritage sites along the river. 'Tresle' on the conjunction of Cap-Rougee and Lawrence river is one of the most representative industrial heritage of the city. I propose to create pedestrian bridge under the still being used railways, and to enable artists of using the space under the new pedestrian bridge as an urban canvass to install their works. Rather than stuffing historical asset to wait until its lifespan, regenerating the asset with contemporary program respecting its historical meaning and increasing accessibility would be better strategy to make the asset being maintained longer and loved more. After regenerating those historical heritages and respecting them along the river, we can create lots of scenarios of educational, natural, tourism routes connecting them.
Saint Charles : It is most visited river and runs many different places and neighborhoods. To take advantage of this variety is essential for developing the river. On the piers and spaces being extruded from the basin, swimming pool, performance stage, market or public programs can be held to extend people's accessibility to the river. On the floating deck or boat, moving public events can be held along the river. Citizen and visitors can get on the floating deck to enjoy the events while flowing on the river, then get off to participate another event on the pier.
Beauport : It is most intimate river to the community. Rather than big sized development, regeneration in smaller scale for the communities would be pertinent considering river's characteristics, and serendipity encountered on each different communities can be expected. People in the community clean the river together, discuss the way of regenerating the river regularly and enhance the quality of riverside area sustainably.
Montmorency : This river has most spectacular sceneries of nature. Thus rather than artificial development along the river, enjoying the water as it is, jumping into the wild nature, and taking advantage of clean water is more reasonable approach.
