"Joie de Vivre"
Amplify + Connect: Reinventing Our Rivers
As one of the oldest city in North America, Quebec is a distinct and culturally rich city. With four centuries of history, unique French-Canadian culture and heritages, together with abundant of natural assets, these characteristics made Quebec City has so much to offer. In term of planning, rivers of Quebec play a vital role in shaping the city and its identity. Besides, St. Lawrence, Cap-Rouge, St.Charles, Beauport and Montmorency, meander through the city and nurture all living organisms. They have shaped Quebec's identity while presented its own unique characters that potentially add up to the identity and attractions of the city of Quebec.
Given the task of rethinking Quebec City, the ultimate goal of this proposal is to achieve "Joie de Vivre" for all Québécois. The project started with a SWOT analysis of the five focus areas. At the same time, the focus areas have been conceptualized to "people + place + pleasure." under the umbrella of sustainable development. Then, an activities map has been constructed to identify a potential development and to direct design directions, under the "Amplify+Connect" design strategy. The regional design emphasizes potential nodes and creates thematic story of each river to promote the theme loop as the new attractions. For the areas of interest, the spatial designs have been categorized into three types as presented in the area of interest focusing on socio-economic, historic and nature heritage, and ecological activities. Cap-Rouge and Beauport rivers present a case of neighborhood rivers that requires local and river interaction which will activate social and economic activities; St. Charles presents a case that rich in culture and heritage but requires an infrastructure that solve pollution problems; Montmorency presents a challenge of four seasons activities and emphasis on sustainable interactions between human and nature.
All in all, this project proposes a strategic planning and landscape design that holistically connect a whole city together. It aims to encourage people to be outside and enjoy year-round activities and boosts the city's sustainable development. With the idea of "Joie de Vivre", we make place for people to transcend our past, live the present, and prepare for a future.
Amplify + Connect: Magnify/Purify/Clarify
The design proposal aims to amplify the historical, cultural, and ecological values of the rivers of Quebec and connect people back to the land and water.
This design purposes to:
- Magnify the values of the ecosystem by maintaining a natural equilibrium where people can safely enjoy the natural assets while the ecosystem will be sustained for the future generation.
- Purify the urban pollution to create more attractive capital city by amplifying the values of its cultural history and purifying the water pollution for more efficient use of the river.
- Clarify the available assets, both historical and ecological, by amplifying these values through physical renovation and connect them in an organized way.
