Going Massive
Going Massive is an idea that uses Timber Massive Construction (TMC) as an inherent material of not only the construction system but also as the primary element of architectural design.
The idea consists of 2 apartment types, a single storey 1 bed apartment & a 2 storey 2 bed apartment, they can be freely arranged in plan or section to vary the appearance or can combine to create a 3 storey 4/5 bed apartment.
The north facing boundary wall is constructed as a ventilated lumber wall, with a public cafe protruding through it acting as a welcome gesture, bringing the public into the contoured timber decked centralized linear courtyard.
The roof consists of an accessible timber decked & landscaped public amenity space with 3 raised roof pods suitable for varying community or educational functions. The landscaped roof could easily combine green space with usable vegetable gardens etc.
The benefit of TMC is that timber can be produced from local sources giving real meaning to sustainability, whilst promoting jobs locally which in turn gives a sense of belonging in the community, with timber being a natural product it gives ease to the forming of a natural bond between the user & the building, creating a sense of ownership.
