Courtyard Dwelling
.Resources - Land Use
One of our most valuable resources is land. It's right under our feet - 0 miles away. Beginning with the premise that land use within urban centres requires careful consideration due to the finite land base and extremely high land costs, we challenge the suggestion of one 1200 ft2 dwelling on a standard 33'x120' city lot. Our proposal is to subdivide the parcel into four small freehold lots, two street fronting and two lane fronting, each of which would be able to contain a 1200 ft2 dwelling.
.Resources - Natural
The project proposes to harness the natural resouces available on site - rain, sun, wind - for a net zero energy house.
.Resources - Material
The project takes on an approach of less is less. The dwelling is modest, and is organized by a thin linear service core against the north wall intersected by a courtyard/ light scoop and thick plywood storage walls. The compactness of the service core allows for generous living spaces to the south. The courtyard and light scoop provides for daylighting, passive heat gain, and spatially expands this modest dwelling.
Wood, readily available within a 100 miles, forms the major components of the project. The structure is cross laminated timber (CLT) panels braced with four thick plywood storage cores that also function as closets, shelves, desks, deep window seats. The CLT structural panels are the interior wall and ceiling finish.
