Description

Courtyard Housing: A Sustainable Community Model on Standard Private Lots in Vancouver

This proposal seeks to maximize the utility of both private and shared exterior spaces and connect with and play a positive role in the neighbourhood at large. Designed around four primary outdoor spaces (internal courtyard, car port/patio, rear-pool (cistern) and side passageway), the project provides a place for all ages - from toddlers to teens and parents as well. Striving to reflect balance between indoor and outdoor, private and shared space, the proposal intended to provide courtyard housing for families that fosters a sense of community, wholeness and well-being.
With intention to provide a quality living environment at densities higher than conventional detached housing, this proposal utilizes courtyards to provide transitional spaces, direct outdoor connections and private outdoor spaces. Each house addresses the relationship between indoor and outdoor spaces in a way that contributes to a typical family life with privacy needs, at the same time promotes engagement with the street and neighbours. The goal is to provide the family a constant engagement between the interior and exterior with "moments" architecturally implied to family for community and environmental interaction.
