Project number 23481

This project, at first glance attractive because of its vast hall and certain elements of post-modernist vocabulary, could have held the interest of the jury if the scale of the neighbourhood and the respect of the historical continuity had not been essential conditions of implantation and volumetry. The competitor chose an architectural parti that expresses itself clearly in contrast with its environment. Strangely, the architecture of the interior spaces is very lively, while the exterior massing of the building is rigid, even austere, despite the frankness and simplicity of its location on the site.

The jury noted the clarity of the design, the openness to the river, the excellent distribution of the various auxiliary functions of the Museum such as the reception and preparation areas for the works, the educational workshops, the administrative offices and the visitor services. It questioned, however, the weak link between the administration and the Museum and the difficulty of converting part of the entrance hall into a permanent gallery.

The effort of insertion on St-Pierre Street, marked by a desire to harmonize the new construction with the street's tight grid, provided the competitor with the opportunity to develop an interesting hierarchy of transitional spaces between the street and the interior of the Museum. On the other hand, the emphasis placed on the lobby to the detriment of the main functions of the building creates, through the presence of an imposing glass roof on the Dalhousie Street side, an impression of excess that could be accentuated at certain times of the day and under certain lighting conditions by the reflective effect of the glass.
