The approach adopted for this project is inspired by a didactic responsibility. The approach adopted includes the use of elementary forms and classical composition as a vehicle for perennial values. Moreover, the architects intend to reveal current social and cultural values by means of formal dialectics.
In formal terms, this is reflected in the implementation of a circular volume at the rear of the building, a volume that will contain the collective functions of the program.
As for the existing part, the architects have chosen to reveal the archetypal values of the conventual complexes while enhancing the definitive secularization of the building. For the landscape concept, the project uses elementary forms as well as elements from the tradition of classical gardens.
(CCC text)
The jury finds that this proposal is reasonable and unambiguous, has a deliberate and assumed rigidity, and the garden design supports the idea well.
The functions grouped in the addition include most of the collective rooms, while the existing is redeveloped at the best cost, which seems logical to the jury.
However, the circle remains a difficult form to treat and if, here, it is not too bad, the architectural lesson is not present and the building remains uninspiring. The junction of the "drum" with the existing building creates poorly resolved exterior spaces. The docking of this volume and its relationship with the circulation axes are not satisfactorily resolved.
The architectural treatment does not correspond to the "veil" referred to in the text. The interventions on the fenestration in the façade of the existing building were not considered convincing. The landscaping presents a contemporary vision of development, proposes an interesting dialogue between the urban and the natural and is well suited to the site; the heaviness and opacity of the architectural object placed in the courtyard, however, does not respond well to the desired integration of the landscape and the architecture.
The north-south axis that abuts the existing building and that manifests itself through an intervention at the level of the fenestration called for a transparency and a communication that does not exist; the opportunity would have been beautiful however.
