Description

Stage 1

Due to its strategic location along the public artery of Old Montreal, the PHI Contemporary will not only enrich the city's cultural network but will also become part of the vast array of landmarks and public buildings scattered throughout it. As such, PHI Contemporary will develop a distinct presence within the Bonsecours site: a compact building with a pure volumetry, a "warehouse" dedicated to the storage and critical examination of the contemporary. Taking advantage of the inherent openness of the surrounding block and detaching itself from it, it allows all sides to integrate the outdoors, through generous lighting, views and green areas. At the same time, its footprint and its volume establish a dialogue with a series of urban references at different scales: the PHI Centre at the other end of Rue st. Paul, the semi-industrial 20th century.

Stage 2

The design of the new PHI Contemporary is fundamentally informed by its surrounding context. For OFFICE, the contextual approach to the site, aims to interpret the local architectural language, its typologies and their spatial relationships. This allowed to formulate a proposal that is radically contemporary and deeply rooted in its territory. The project lays its foundations in a careful reading of traces, the area topography and the existing buildings' charachter, achieving an appropriate scale and proportion and organically integrating the regulatory boundaries in it's design. The result of this process is a simple and clear urban volume capable of establishing a sophisticated dialogue with its surrounding past and present context.

PHI Contemporary's primary objective is to integrate the heritage of the place and its buildings in a solid and natural ensamble, by creating a collection of houses and rooms in dialogue with the different scales of Old Montreal and its port. The first critical approach to the morphology of the existing complex is to identify in its multitude of interventions and historical stratifications, the pure and archetypical volumetry of the Maison Pier Du Calvet, Davies Store and Maison Louis Viger, letting them re-emerge in their original form. By freeing the interior of the site from all the annexes built over the years, a new large courtyard opens onto rue Bonsecours, allowing a clearer reading of the existing buildings and highlighting the palimpsest of traces accumulated in many parts of the site.

The articulation of the site into two main wings offers the opportunity to work with multiple urban fronts, activate the surrounding streets and provide the ensamble a unified identity. The urban layout opens up to the access of different groups of users, providing them with an appropriate and specific space. The definition of its cardinal entrance points is informed by a careful reading of the flows that cross Old Montreal and link the project to the surrounding areas. Neighbourhood carriageways are integrated into this comprehensive access system where new pathways are specifically created within the site, enriching the design of the building itself.

Stage 3

The PHI Contemporary project is rooted in a deep historical and urban analysis of Old Montreal's fabric. While confronting its proximate context, the project related to PHI's cultural and architectural lineage. The new PHI Contemporary premises will complete a public constellation of buildings, mutually accessible and strongly interconnected in typology, expression, and content. The new PHI Contemporary will thus become a natural continuation of this legacy in the making, giving new meanings to the Bonsecours site and to the presence of PHI in the city.

The international scope of PHI Contemporary is reflected in its approach to heritage. While distinctly local in its appearance, the architecture of the Viger, du Calvet houses and Davies Store resonates far beyond its surroundings, as it is rooted in the history of colonial settlement in the Americas. How can contemporary art and architecture embrace the many facets of this history? The project uses a typological strategy typical of old Montreal, combining a courtyard at ground level with a geometrically simple structure aligned with the street. While providing ample space to public ground, this approach allows full volumetric expression of the three historic structures to have a prominent role in shaping the identity of PHI Contemporary. Through a comprehensive analysis of the historic structures' characteristics, a detailed heritage strategy was developed for their respectful restoration. Facades, floors, materiality and layout of the houses are maintained and profoundly reintegrated in the project with punctual additions and modifications, informing it from the outset.

Jury Report

Stage 1

A clever proposal that stands out by its simplicity and clarity while carrying a level of sophistication. The scale of this "magic box" is good, the proportions are beautiful, the urbanity is evident and the sensitivity to the historic context is notable.

The courtyard access and urban window are strong gestures that are consistent with PHI Contemporary's desire to invite the public to actively engage with its offer.

Stage 2

In general, the jury appreciates:
· The intelligence of the thinking, the clarity of the architectural concept, the poetry of the proposal, the innovative character of the whole, all elements that contribute to give strength and coherence to the project, which is promising for the development of the next stage;

· The typological approach at the base of the concept that gives meaning to the site, produces a scale that is right and leads to a convivial use of the space with, for example, the creation of the exterior courtyard, a rather original space in the context of Old Montreal that enriches the public domain;

· The organization and definition of the interior spaces, which offer a variety of different experiences, present a certain informality that the artists will appreciate and, through their compactness, generate a conviviality that is in keeping with the spirit of PHI Contemporain.

Regarding the development of the architectural concept, the jury emphasizes:
· The interest of pushing even further the reflection on the definition and the articulation of the different components of the project by going beyond the "magic box";

· The need to deepen the reflection on all aspects concerning the conception of the exhibition spaces, the presentation of the different art forms, the satisfaction of the needs of the artists, curators and technicians and, ultimately, the encounter of the public with art and artists;

· The importance of taking into account all the comments contained in the technical committee's report, concerning, among other things, circulation, universal accessibility and materiality.

Stage 3

Summary of the jury's comments during the deliberations

A playful and joyful project that presents an urban generosity through its openness to the city and the presence of the garden. The relationship with the historic buildings is very clear. The scale of the project is good and the attention paid to the landscape is great. However, there are questions about the layout of the courtyard and the resolution of the street façade.

Project developed to a high level of detail that presents resolution of some of the functional issues identified in Stage 2.

Compact concept that proposes a critical examination of the contemporary, with spatial and programmatic adjacencies suggested as a new paradigm for the experience of institutional programming. Through its compactness, this bold concept can produce surprising experiences for visitors and users but can also pose challenges for day-to-day operations.

Great clarity of plan and a building that presents a quality of interior spaces through well-controlled tectonics, materiality and detailing.
