Description

The genesis of a new urban ecosystem

Our vision is to create a new landscape and a new ecosystem to initiate the genesis of an ecological corridor and a unique citizen's pathway in Montreal.

This vision supports a bold paradigm of integrating ecosystem-based green infrastructure into cities to adapt them to climate change.

Based on the premise that the territory is a living organism, and using existing woodlands and green spaces as a source landscape, we implement a system of physical, terrestrial, aerial and human connections. This new connected landscape enables existing biodiversity to inoculate a variety of new, favourable environments, which in turn become engines for the production and propagation of specific, genetic and ecosystem diversity.

Our approach is based on the concept of the "Novel Ecosystem", where ecosystems are designed to adapt to the disturbed environment, rather than attempting to recreate the natural environment identically. Our planning intentions are inspired by the principles of ecosystemic planning, taking into account the interconnectedness of spaces and the multitude of players, with their varied values and needs, who come together in them.

Our approach is sensitive and poetic, inspired by bio-land-art, as we imagine this open-air ecosystemic and artistic laboratory. A creative alchemy from scientific and artistic fields, deliberately decompartmentalized.

In this Corridor, every small or large parcel of open land must be managed to increase yields and ecological connections. The greening and wildlife management strategy is based on 3 main actions. The first is to restore the physical, chemical and biological properties of soils by promoting plant biodiversity and limiting the use of monoculture turf. The second is to create large areas of melliferous and bird-feeding plants to increase pollination and the movement of entomofauna and avifauna. The third is to create physical connections under roads for the passage of amphibian fauna.

Our success will depend on a fourth dimension: time. We favour solutions to optimize the speed of implementation of the living environment for the targeted fauna and greening. To follow their evolution, monitor and adjust these ecosystem components - assets to be managed in the same way as other urban infrastructures - research fields will be set up to observe the wildlife and test the biochemical components of the soil and the health of the plants.

The organization of our facilities is based on a biological form that is the common thread running through our system: the DNA chain. The double helix represents nature and culture in infinite succession, carrying all genetic information and structured into links represented by our 3 axes of intervention: wildlife habitats, greening and citizen pathways. Conceptually, these evoke the shape of a hexagonal cell, which becomes the visual signature of the project, reflected in the furniture, pavement markings and signage.
