Visions of Montreal
Not just a lookout tower*
It is time for the Olympic Stadium roof to serve the city of Montreal and its people again, and what better way to repurpose the old roof than to provide a platform for appreciating the new Olympic Stadium?
The lookout towers add a vertical experience to the Olympic Stadium's surroundings, attracting visitors to nearby parks and revitalizing the area.
While recycling the old roof, the tower concept incorporates sustainable and ecological elements into its design.
The symbioses between the prominent masts and platforms, combined with the subtle and transparent cable system, allow the structure to blend into its surroundings.
The three masts converge at the base of the tower, creating an inviting sense of lightness and comfort as one crosses the cable curtain into the stairway.
The use of hugging stairs and triangular platforms with transparent handrails encourages visitors to explore the views in all directions before continuing on to the next level.
The convergence of the three masts into a single point at the bottom is possible due to the stabilizing cable system.
The masts (struts) under compression are able to withstand wind and other horizontal loads when working as a push and pull system together with the main corner cables.
The crossing diagonal cables provide torsional stability, which prevents the tower from rotating around its axis.
The staircases hug the masts from the outside for the first three segments before moving into the inner triangle at the penultimate platform, providing visitors who are afraid of heights with an increased sense of safety.
The result is a slender lookout tower that blends in with its surroundings and allows visitors to experience Montreal on another level.
