Description

The Dirigible Pavilion - a mobile lantern/projector - is guided by ropes along the Venetian canals at night. Hardware on the outer skin provides points of attachment for rigging. A loudspeaker inside the pavilion plays music in a Canadian theme, composed for the specific occasion and the enjoyment of public.

A light source in the interior of the dirigible illuminates large-scale photographs of the Canadian landscape printed within the layers of its skin. At night, these images of the Canadian landscape, along with images of projects by Patkau Architects (printed on the outer skin), pass before the windows of the buildings along the canals, illuminating rooms and small exterior spaces. At dawn, the pavilion assumes its second persona as it is brought to rest for the day in a large campo. In this state it can viewed from a distance or approached for closer inspection. Its outer surface presents greatly enlarged details from the drawings of Patkau Architects.

By day, only the drawings on the pavilion's surface are visible. By night, the color landscape images dominate, obscuring the drawings.
