The architecture of the pavilion is conceived as an alternative measuring device: an open-ended framework for the revealing of a poetic conception of site.
The project investigates two Venetian geographical constructs: the man-made ground plane as datum and the water's edge as boundary. Within its simple shell, the architecture presents a dialogue between Venice, its urban fabric, and its program as a container for architectural ideas.
The entry sequence, through a series of ground works, embodies a variety of spatial experiences related to the ground plane datum. The sequence culminates in the pavilion's volume, which is engaged by a stair from which one simultaneously views exhibited work and a framed view of the city. Modulated natural light from the ceiling plane creates an implicit connection to the water.
