To make architecture evocative of a past presence and the spirit of the place in complementarity with the concept of interpretation, that is our intention in a few words. Architecture for us is more than a shelter, more than a construction. Already from afar in the landscape, a shape is emerging, it can arouse interest or blend in. The horizon of the St. Lawrence, the silhouette of Basque Island, the wharf, the image of the ovens, the profile of a whaleboat, these are all elements that the architecture can integrate in various ways. A shelter of course, but an image that is qualified, that responds to all these elements in a unique bouquet.
Concept:
Imbued with Basque culture and the potential of the site, we structured our project on three levels: a functional level, a symbolic level, and an interpretative level. On the functional level, we articulate the building around the pelota court positioned in the east-west axis, which becomes a real public square, protected from the prevailing winds.
Three symbolic elements evoke the Basque culture. The multi-purpose room takes up the proportions and orientation of the Labourdine house. It is embedded in a structure that suggests the volumetry and the framework. The wall of the pelota court takes the typical silhouette of the pediments that rise in many Basque villages. Finally, the elongated form of the volume of the private spaces wrapped in a lath covering, the pillars supporting the roof, which protects the ramp leading to the hall, evokes the world of navigation with its hulls, masts and embarkation docks.
