Description

The Tangle
The location and layout of the proposed design were chosen as a vision to be a thoughtful addition to the immediate environment and a vibrant installation in the city, showing it to be a place of creativity, critical thinking and progress. The design weaves many concepts of place and function with the use of genuine public spaces that are humanly-scaled and environmentally sensitive.

Connection to the students and community are achieved through several methods of physical and visual access. The design straddles a rail yard connecting downtown to a residential sector. Arms of the building reach into the existing fabric of the city which frames focal points of the building to draw you into and around it. The connections allow access not only to the school of architecture but also increase access over the rail yard with a park setting on a sky walk.

Inspiring architecture brings our senses to life. The building form proposed is unique and influenced by the Northern Lights, intertwining with the city as a vibrant installation in the landscape. Use of glazing at the walls and roof connect the interior spaces to the exterior with views and natural lighting. The desire is that the building and its surrounding be an influential place to generate creativity and critical thinking.

Sustainability will be achieved through several passive and active methods. The exterior enclosure is made of innovative technologies to improve the thermal rating of the design. A habitable landscaped roof will relieve expanses of yard surfaces and act as a thermal barrier for the building below. Highly insulated exterior walls clad in native Canadian granite provide excellent control of heat loss and heat gains which is energy and resource efficient. The glazing is a double wall system where the outer layer is made up of operable panels for passive heat exchange.

Indoor and outdoor water features also provide cooling for the building's mechanical system as well as audio and visual inspiration for the occupants. And several of the finish materials allow the users to experience resourceful use. There are interior and exterior walls of indigenous white birch wood. Translucent colored resin panels form separation walls of public and privates areas, yet allow natural light to penetrate deep into spaces.
