Description

The concept for Newtown's New Town Site is to establish a vibrant public realm that is then framed and reinforced by private development. The neighborhood structure emerges from an urban grid, which is born out of the existing and historical development patterns in this area.

A strong north/south axis of open space injects urban agriculture into the heart of the neighborhood. The relocated cenotaph becomes a community focal point and gathering area. Fronting along the central garden space are land uses that contribute to the safety and enjoyment of this public benefit.

Four distinct quadrants of the actvity link drectly with this open-space spine.

The southeast quadrant places the existing library and seniors' centre in a new sculpture garden that is frames by a new green-roofed community cetnre and arena to the north, and mid-rise housing to the south and east.

The northeast quadrant contains a commercial marketpalce featuring a pedestrian path that links the urban forest and central spine with the transit centre and adjacent housing forms.

The transit centre itself links a high density southwest residential quadrant with a mixed-use commercial and live/work quadrant in the northwest corner of the neighborhood.
