Description

NEW NOTRE-DAME-DE-GRÂCE CULTURAL CENTER

Today, libraries have a complex function in our society. The traditional concept of libraries as a place for storage and reading has evolved. The program for the Notre-Dame-de-Grâce cultural center is an eloquent testimony to this change, in which the contemporary library is now part of an entity offering multiple cultural functions.

In response to this recent programming issue, the spaces intended to be agitated or quiet are defined by differing spatial qualities. As a general rule, the first floor is bright and transparent and hosts social activities that create a link with the surrounding community. In contrast, the upstairs spaces, designed to be quiet, offer controlled and directed views of the outdoors where the light filtered through skylights creates an introverted atmosphere, distant from the outside world.

The new cultural center of Notre-Dame-de-Grâce aims to become an integral part of the existing urban fabric and to contribute directly to the spirit of community sharing already present in the Benny Farm block. Three significant architectural gestures allow this integration to be achieved:

1_ The volumetry of the new cultural center was designed to establish a relationship to the adjacent streets similar to those created by the existing buildings and the future CLSC, so that it can adequately complete the northeast corner of the block. The volumetry was also developed in such a way as to create, like the other buildings, semi-public / semi-private spaces. By exploiting these spaces in a way that is both functional and aesthetically pleasing, they will contribute to reinforcing and containing the existing spirit of community, particularly the one so present in the neighbouring community garden. In addition to the integration of decorative crabapple trees into the landscape design of the project, we also propose a symbolic extension of this garden into the space dedicated to loading and parking.

2_ The program has been organized on the site in such a way as to generate clear and easily readable entrances and relationships between the city and community spaces so that the new cultural center becomes a true meeting place between the various stakeholders of the project as well as with the population of the borough.

3_ A strong visual link is established with the urban fabric through the choice of an innovative masonry cladding whose brick color is similar to that of the existing buildings in the area and on the Benny Farm block.

The new cultural center was also designed as a "signature" building to assert its importance in the community as a cultural institution as well as to mark its social function in relation to the city, different from that of the surrounding residential buildings. In order to achieve this second nature of the building, various strategies have been implemented.

The Cultural Centre project proposes an approach and vision of sustainable development that is contextual and appropriate to the community of Benny Farm, even extending to the whole of Notre-Dame-de-Grâce.
