Break Free. Reach Out
The addition extends outward from within the historic block, reaching out to draw in. it derives from the intrinsic morphology of the past evolutions but seeks to defy the boundaries of past growth. It aims to physically connect one unconfined emblematic space (the square) to another confined emblematic space (the seminary courtyard). It becomes an agent for the reversal of flows, bringing community to the heart of the school and the school to the center of the community, finally negating the “introverted monastic life” of the seminary.
Respect. Confront
The addition aims to subtly approach & confront the somewhat latent but revered religious-civic axis that connects the cathedral to the city hall, rendering this axis as an asymptote, neither disturbed nor threatened by the addition. The addition will open up the school & welcome all uses imparting education and all users seeking education, hoping to blur the boundaries between religious & secular, institutional & communal forms of education. As a renewed ahistorical metaphor, the addition seeks to bring education (school) out of the shadow of religion (cathedral). The square now has three emblems around it: the religious, the civic and the educational.
Insert. Remove
To reach out & draw in, the addition infiltrates the existing historic fabric in a daring but somewhat intrusive manner. It seeks insertion and removal at the same time. It warrants maximum transparency. Fully Glazed skins, expansive northlights on the roof & dormers or varying sizes make the volume light and airy. Interior divisions & walls disappear creating a continuous flow of changing programs, making visible, not the building, but only the activities within.
