Emblematic addition
Sited within the main courtyard of the school, our emblematic addition is oriented to both the existing urban grid of Old Quebec and the sun. Programmatically, the building is divided into three main areas: a public auditorium at grade level, an exhibition gallery at the first level, and a “Render Farm/Computer lab” at the top level. The addition is linked to the existing school through two bridges, both connected to studio spaces.
This project consolidates the interrelationships between the architecture student, the school, and the city. These relationships can be expressed as three fundamental equations:
1- Student + school = ??
The student should have the opportunity for both active and passive learning. In our project, active learning (learning initiated by the student) is encouraged through didactic architecture that clearly expresses the fundamental concepts of foundation, structure and envelope. Passive learning (learning initiated by an instructor) is augmented by the inclusion of a “Render Farm”, a networked computer lab enabling students to explore new technologies in order to remain competitive in an ever changing profession.
2- School + city = ??
The school should contribute to the urban character of the city in a responsible manner. While the siting of the project appropriates the courtyard (which is currently primarily used by adjacent secondary school) the addition of green space enhances this area. Furthermore, placing the auditorium at ground level allows it to become a shared resource within the community. The school should also be respectful of place; not only geographically, but historically as well. The central light well, which sits at the heart of the addition, acknowledges the importance of light to both architecture and religion.
3- City + student = ??
The city should maintain a dialogue with the students and their work. By appropriating the chapel of Congregation as a studio space, the public link to the school is further strengthened. As the public enters the courtyard they pass under students working into a space where the culmination of their labour is displayed.
