The Emblemathic Incision
In between the Museum de l'Amérique Française and the Notre-Dame de Québec Cathedral is the entrance for the Laval University School of Architecture. With the lack of street presence in a historically dense fabric, the entrance for the architecture school is overshadowed by the Museum and the Cathedral. The new proposed addition provides an alternative entrance from Rue Port Dauphin. This addition provides a 350 seat auditorium for the architecture school along with gallery and critic spaces. Gallery space connects and extends to the existing building on the same level as the current entrance. The addition is composed of simple architecture elements serving their essential purpose while giving an emblematic appearance for the school. Stairs provide directionality, connect circulations and fame views. Walls provide enclosure, openings, and formally retain and respond to boundaries. Windows provide views, light, and reflections. The addition has two distinct facades responding to courtyard of the Seminary de Quebec and the other responding to the lower city, the Archevêque de Québec and the Cathedral.
