Emblemathic addition
Main Concept
In accordance with the objectives of the competition, an addition to Laval University School of Architecture aims to be the continuation of the existing building and not con¬sidered as a separate structure in the site. In other words the new addition attempts to maintain the common tectonic and architectural unity of the traditional historical buildings of the site, white it engages the innovative contemporary ideas. For this reason the prominent characteristics of Laval School of Architecture on one hand, and the French architecture applied to surrounding buildings on the other hand are investigated as the main concepts to design the addition building. Open three-wing layout plan with a separate aggrandized roof, linear geometry and integration of the gardens in the composition of the complex are the three most notable features shaping the future addition building.
Entrance
The entrance of the universe opens in one of the main squares of the city and visually it is the representation of the whole historical site that is a collaborative between state and church. This newly designed entrance reflects the site's religious origins and its institutional roots but in a contemporary language.
Façade
The entire facades of the addition building try to combine two dominant features of the site, religion and education. Moreover, the new facades reflect the transitional contrast between old and new periods in architecture, linking the old classical order to the new deconstruction disorder.
Christian Cross and T ruler are chosen as the symbols of religion and education. While the new facades Gloser to the existing building are more regular in the order of windows and façade elements, this regularity gradually fades into an irregularity in subsequent facades. The third wing of the addition building turn towards the museum to create a visually continuous roof, the regular order of the facades appears again in a way to be connected to the old-fashion style of the museum building.
