Description

Conceptual Strategy

Preserve the historic integrity of the external approaches and facades
This dictates that any alterations or additions visible from surrounding streets should be minimal and aesthetically sympathetic to existing form. Furthermore, it will restrict placement of the new amphitheatre and multi-use space to the vicinity of the internal courtyard.

Provide a central reception point for all visitors
This should serve both the main entrance and a revised entrance from the car-park and cater for all public events including those not connected with the school.

Close the circulation loop
The `U-shape' of the existing building does not appear to be conducive to efficient communication between various departments within the school. New-build should turn the `U' into an `O' at the upper levels.

Configure the Courtyard Addition as Shared Public Space
It is acknowledged that at the present time, use of the courtyard is restricted to certain events. It is suggested that the school declares the new amphitheatre to be a public facility, open to third parties when not in use by the school in order to receive the Seminary's planning approval.

Resolution
The main entrance has been visually `strengthened' whilst retaining its current aesthetic heritage.
The car-park public entrance is located at Level 01 to provide direct visual access to the new reception point and control visitor access to the school.
The new reception point is located within the courtyard adjacent to the public amphitheatre and visible from bath entrances.
A high-level pedestrian bridge is introduced linking the 'open ends' of the studios with each other and the amphitheatre to aid circulation. Furthermore, the intention is to keep the space as open as possible at courtyard level for public use.
