The building including the Laval University of School of Architecture used to be designed and used for training future priests. It became also one of the most important building in Quebec city.
However, focused on the building form, you can find that the character of the building figure does not suit the recent University requirement of contributing to the local community, because the building type is religion architecture which has closed plan composition to the outside.
Solving these problem, we propose the inheritance of the meaning of this traditional building constructed as a religious architecture by adding symbolic monument in the courtyard of the University, and the exchange of inside and outside of the University by connecting the University to the city hall square underground.
At first, we insert cruciform monument in the courtyard in the center of the University as an emblematic addition inheriting the history of the building as a religious symbol of Old Quebec.
The monument connects the edges of the U-shaped building, and improves the accessibility of the building.
If also connects the building to underground where we are planning multi-functional space and communication space, with an elevator and steps.
The underground addition has cruciform skylight in the ground level for ventilation and lighting.
The cruciform monument and skylight become pair each other like a reflection, and will promote the symbolic nature of the traditional building.
In addition, when you walk along the skylight toward west, we can reach the amphitheater.
We propose the amphitheater under the basement in the city hall square, surrounded by city hall, cathedral of Nortre-Dame de Quebec and the University and encourage the use not only for University students but also the citizens.
We' d like to propose that the symbolic cross connect the University to local community.
