Upholding the belief that architecture school is a vibrant experience which is enriched by the plural voices of students, the community and visiting architects; this new addition invites vi¬sitors off the street and encourages them to become active participants in the design school.
At the same time, by providing much needed informal and formal meeting spaces, this new addition helps the school accommodate and display their dynamic calendar of exhibitions, lecture series and workshops.
The proposal consists of two elements: an iconic, snaking WAY-FINDING FORM and a deli¬cate, modern PAVILION.
WAY-FINDING FORM:
The new addition's WAY-FINDING FORM is an eye-catching element which draws visitors from the street and leads them into the school's historic courtyard. Once inside the courtyard, the WAY-FINDING FORM morphs into a Briefing Room, a Grand Staircase and a hovering, 350-seat Amphitheater.
PAVILION
In order to access the new amphitheater and classrooms located in the existing building, visi¬tors and students must enter into the school's new heart, the PAVILION. In the PAVILION, the school's informal meeting areas are reorganized under one welcoming roof. Here passers-by can look at exhibited student work, stop in at a critique and meet at the café.
