Occupying the Cliff Side
Laval University School of Architecture Addition

Over the course of several hundred years, the once prominent Seminary building, now school of architecture has become more and more hidden within a complex fabric of more contemporary structures. In giving the University a stronger prominence within the city, one may think that the building in which it exists must be extracted from its sur¬roundings. The school of architecture expresses a desire to reach out more to the com¬munity, in a sense to claim more territory not only physically but socially. An approach of extension allows for the university to establish itself stronger within the city, provides opportunity for more public program, and continues the progression through outdoor areas that has remained prominent throughout the life of the Seminary building.

The upper city consists of a dense fabric and inhibited views, the cliff Bide at the east¬ern end of the school provides for an expansive view of the lower city which is rich in galleries and antique stores. Where the upper city provides for an intimate entrance into the school's campus, the lower city provides for a great opportunity in creating a connection to the community with the proposed program of student gallery spaces. The cliff is a very important part of the history and character of the Quebec, and the point of connection between the upper and lower city. Extending the University to occupy the cliff ride not only gives it an incredibly strong presence within its surroundings, but allows for more means of descending into the lower city and opening up to the public.
