ECOLE D'ARCHITECTURE
emblematic additon
The emblematic edition to Laval University's school of Architecture engages with the existing historical architecture with minimal disruption to the site. The parti is an apparatus, attached to, and supported by the other buildings adjacent to it. The building can be seen as a machine that adapts to the needs of the users while working to define the emerging paradigm of technological symbiosis with nature.
The design of multipurpose space and a 350-seat auditorium is based on the gathering and exchange of ideas, and works to promote creativity and unify the student body within the school. Important to this concept was flexibility of the space to meet the changing needs of the users. Moveable wall partitions allow multiple configurations of space for review sessions, meetings or studios. The floor changes in elevation to allow for visual connection through the entire space. Furthermore, the interstitial space around the theater provides places to read or work, while being connected to the activity of the multipurpose area below. As part of a sliding mechanism, the façade louvers extend to create an outdoor space with a view to St. Lawrence River. Additionally, two stages can be lowered from the bottom of the building to transform what is now a parking lot into an event space for concerts or school events. The addition utilizes passive solar design to allow for thermal while the solar panels attached to the roof generate power for the building.
