Iconic integration
The existing condition of the school's historic building is transformed through a series of internal interventions and the addition of an auditorium underneath the courtyard. An emblematic section is generated that provides a new reading and expanded experience of the school's existing spaces without disturbing the building's existing façade or the site's unique urban fabric. New spaces are created within the building through targeting the existing circulation system and vertical cores. Fragmented geometries are inserted at these targeted points of interest to reorganize vertical movement within the building and provide new pockets of loosely programmed space for socializing, private study, napping, displaying work, and more. By cutting void spaces through existing conditions, unique cross programmatic connections are revealed both vertically and horizontally. The materiality of these new constructions is suppressed to suggest a natural integrated of the new forms within the old system of organization. This creates instances of growth that are generated and supported by the existing conditions, revealing themselves through new spatial textures rather than a contrasting material language. These new nodes of interaction and event feed into a subterranean addition located beneath the building's courtyard. This added space is intended as a multiple-use forum, promoting open discussion and interaction within the school. A central stage is surrounded by a seating bowl which can be configured into lecture halls or auditoria of various sizes to accommodate different functional needs. The bowl is surrounded by open-plan flex-spaces which can be utilized as galleries, critique venues, expanded seating for the auditorium, cafes, and so on. The space provides a new center of Iife for the school, encouraging an environment of exchange between students, faculty, and the public. The new circulation cores and centralized auditorium work together to enliven the architecture school through a new spatial understanding of the existing condition. This iconic intervention of space preserves the beauty and historic character of the existing building while giving the school a new identity.
