Cubic Insert
The Laval University School of Architecture is located in Quebec, Quebec, in a quaint, sixteenth century building that is loaded with historical presence. The building, once a seminary, has been a constant project of additions and renovations throughout its history, and is an icon to many in the city. However, the school today has several issues in terms of satisfying the needs of a prestigious architecture school. There is little open space, a Jack of area for jury critiques and displays, no identifiable entrance, and cramped vertical space. The Cubic Insert design attempts to be the most contemporary addition to the beautiful school, and does so while attempting to resolve many of the issues with the current building program. The cubes, inserted elegantly upon the face of the existing school, use sustainable and modern materials to point towards the future white not completely detracting from the past architecture. A recycled glass curtain skin is used to create a contrast be¬tween old and new. The cubes also are situated within the school to open up the interior, adding many important needs such as space for dis-plays, juries, media labs, and student lounging and work spaces. Integrated also are two vertical circulation nodes — areas of the building opened up to allow for open vertical circulation throughout the building. The finished product is an elegant, sleek design that decongests the interior space, provides more natural light, and consciously works to enhance, not detract from, the face of the existing architecture.
