The strong silhouette of the Laval University School of Architecture's bell towers and austere structure reflect the traditional ties of the school. The proposed additions attempt to continue this tradition white incorporating modern materials and innovative technology.
The proposal comprises of an auditorium, exhibition and critique space, revised courtyard space, as well as an emblematic tower. In order to respect the site lines and layout of the existing structures, the auditorium and exhibition space are completely submerged underground. This allows for open and green spaces to continue being an integral part of the campus. The placement of the tower at the front of the School, closest to the entrance along Rue Port Dauphin allows the tower to serve three functions. The tower reinforces the visual rhythm of the bell towers adjacent to it, as well as serving as a visible focal point and main entrance to the school. The use of similar materials and color palette continues the vernacular of the School, Seminary, and Quebec City, while integrating corten steel as a compatible material.
