The Jubilee Wing
The identity of Laval University proves to be both eclectic and demonstrates the evolution of building ideas and character through time. Jubilee Wing, the newly proposed addition to the School of Architecture intends to celebrate just this. Our first intuition was to not complete with the existing building, nor to create an intrusive addition.
Instead, our idea is to frame the exterior of the existing building to create a new dynamic space with history as its backdrop. Jubilee Wing visually and physically only attaches itself to a small portion of the building exterior. It does not inhibit any pre-existing function of activity within any of the spaces but creates more active, useable space and great circulation. A third floor addition is created holding a flexible space capable for extra studio spaces, critique rooms or exhibition areas.
A circulation core connects this area with the ground level which leads into an underground auditorium. A raised skylight accessing the auditorium allows for a great connection between interior and exterior spaces and defines a new aesthetic and interaction for the existing courtyard.
The material choice was carefully selected to enhance the ideas that we have intended. A portion of the 3rd storey addition uses similar materials of stone and plaster that can be found on the exterior of the existing building. A glass box extrudes from this stone addition to signify the coming of the new, out of the evolution of the old. Like architecture and like Laval University, the future can only excel in evolution from a great foundation of the old.
