Description

As Albertans we engage the weather as a fluid mass that envelopes us in its extremes. From 20 hours of sunlight to 30 below zero an all he fluctuations in between the weather acts as the backdrop for our physical activities. Weather stripping proposes for Edmonton a new kind of park facility that engages both the pragmatic aspects of providing changing rooms, office space and storage and the desire for public spaces that engage all community members in shared experiences.

This proposal sees the John Fry Park Pavilion as device for modulating the light, sound and activity of the site in such a way that the activities that happen in interior of the building's public spaces could be seen to be just as important as those that happen on adjacent athletic fields. The building is situated in such a way on the site as to maximize southeastern exposure and capture low winter sun, while providing a place to be protected from the high summer sun. The glazed community room opens up via sliding doors in the summer to take advantage of natural ventilation and to provide a shared space from which to observe the various activities on the site. The building orientation and parking redesign also allows for festivals and other events to be supported by the public WCs and concessions area which opens to interior and exterior spaces.

The subtle but evocative forms of the building's roof allow for natural daylighting, precipitation collection and natural air movement. The ceilings and walls of the public spaces are covered with a cedar shingle surface which modulates light and air into the space and produces both a visually striking interior and one that balances out the smells associated with changing rooms, wash closets and physical activity. The pavilion is in short a pavilion for the senses we experience with our bodies when we engage in sports and the sense of community we experience when we gather no matter the weather.

The interior spaces are distributed in such a way as to create a large public corridor/warming space, in with park users can nook meeting space, hold events and prepare for the various athletic activities in the park. This space would contain a large piece of site specific art covering an entire wall of the public even space.
