The building responds to the need for an 1131m2 park pavilion serving City of Edmonton seasonal programming, together with the program requirements of the Crystal City Softball Association, the Edmonton Ladies Softball Association and the South Edmonton Elite Baseball Association.
Designed on Biophilic and Sustainable Design Principles, the building responds to its setting through the use of durable natural materials including primarily wood, stone masonry, and glazing. While the interior wall finishes will be primarily concrete block masonry for durability, the use of stone masonry wall finishes in feature locations will be incorporated. The glazed public multipurpose room will face south to take advantage of the southern exposure, but will be shaded against excessive heat gain by a substantial roof overhang and sun screens. As security conditions allow, openings in the south wall comprised of sliding glass doors will allow the building to engage the
pleasant aspect of an adjacent south facing patio. The north side of the building will include clearstory windows allowing natural light and ventilation into change room areas. Clearstory windows will also be provided above the stone masonry walls that will define the south side of both the east and west corridors accessing the locker rooms. Each of the two main entrances are protected from the north winds by an extended wing wall, and each entry will feature a commissioned sculpture in accordance with the City of Edmonton art dedication policy.
