The pavilion sits within a clearing of trees on the 122 ha. Victoria Park site which forms part of the River Valley Parks system. The new pavilion will share the site with two existing buildings; the Victoria Park Golf Course Club House and Park maintenance building. The new pavilion will incorporate the functions of the two existing facilities on the immediate project site, the male & female washrooms and skate change trailers under one roof. The park is used year round with an outdoor ice skating rink and cross-country skiing in the winter and the summer activities revolve around picnic sites, hiking & biking trails, a ball diamond, horse shoe pits, cricket pitch, and golf course. The Pavilion primary serves the ice skating rink that is open to City residents for public skating and is used by members of the Edmonton Speed Skating Association (ESSA) for training and speed skating events. The City funded areas of the pavilion include the male & female washrooms, indoor skate change area, vending machine area, kitchen/future concession, storage, and office space. For ESSA use the Association funded spaces are a training room, workshop with storage, and Zamboni garage.
BUILDING CONCEPT
The Victoria Park pavilion is conceptually born from wind swept snow drifts shaped around a fixed formation of ice projecting from the ground. The ice formation contains the public space while the snow drifts form the semi-public and building services spaces of the facilities. During the winter the pavilion's form will integrate the building into the landscape. In the summer it will be a sculptural element in juxtaposed to its natural surroundings be a tribute to Edmonton's winter heritage.
BUILDING LAYOUT
The Pavilion is split into two buildings. The Main Pavilion is 365m2 in area with the Indoor skate change area within a full glazed atrium that doubles as the circulation for entire building. The atrium volume rises from the northeast corner to the southwest corner. The highest point of the atrium is aligned with the existing clearing between the tree line that surrounds the skating oval to capture as much natural light as the sun travels east to west. The main entrance of this building is at southwest corner of building for access from the ice skating oval and parking lot. A secondary entrance of the pavilion is provided at the northeast corner for access to picnic sites, trials, and the volleyball court on the east side of the building.
The semi-public and building services spaces is organized around the indoor skate change area. The kitchen / future concession, multipurpose room, ski wax, and ski / bike storage is situated on north side of atrium. Shaped along the south side of the atrium is the male & female washrooms, and office. These "solid" forms are clad in galvalume finished corrugated metal siding. To emphasize these "solid" forms, for locations where windows are provided into the Office, Multi-Purpose Room, and Washrooms (clerestoreys) for natural light a perforated siding panel is applied over the exterior window frame. During the day the wall is solid but during the evening when the interior lights are on strips of light penetrate the metal siding.
The ESSA funded user spaces of the Training Room, Workshop / Storage and Zamboni Storage is housed in a separate 375m2 building located to the east of the Main Pavilion. The construction of the building can be phased with the City funded spaces constructed initially with the ESSA spaces to follow.
An open plaza on west side of building is accessed via sliding doors extends the interior space of the atrium to the exterior during the summer. The Percent for Art is allocated space on the interior (indoor skate change area) and exterior within the plaza.
BUILDING COMPONENTS - STRUCTURAL
The atrium will have a steel superstructure on to support the aluminum window framed glazing. The spaces around the atrium will have load-bearing concrete block wall to support an open web steel joist roof and metal roof deck system. The steel and concrete block walls will be supported on a pile & grade beam foundation. The floor will be a concrete slab-on-grade system.
BUILDING COMPONENTS - ARCHITECTURAL
The roofing system will be a two ply SBS on rigid insulation on the structural metal deck. Generally the exterior walls will be prefinished metal siding over rigid insulation, on an air/vapour barrier over concrete block. To achieve the sloping angles of the walls metal studs and modified metal z-bars will be used in combination. The interior walls will primarily be exposed concrete block left unpainted but protected with a sealer. The Office and Multipurpose Room will be the only spaces receive an overlay of 16mm gypsum board for a more finished look. Windows, entrances, and atrium walls & roof will be thermal low E, double-glazed, tinted glazing in thermally broken aluminum frames. Ceilings in the Office and Multipurpose Room will be suspended acoustic ceiling panels and the ceilings in the washrooms suspended gypsum board. Flooring will be rubber flooring throughout.
BUILDING COMPONENTS - MECHANICAL
The pavilions heating and cooling system will be an earth-air-heat (EAH) exchanger coupled with a high efficiency furnace to supplement the system in extreme cold weather. The piping for the EAH will be located 1.5m - 3.0m below grade where the ground temperature range is 10ºC - 23ºC taking the outside air and preconditioning it before being distributed throughout the facility. Controls will be a direct digital control system (DDC), which can provide monitoring of the building systems on and off the site. Air mechanical systems to be integrated to function with motorized dampers in the atrium to modulate the ventilation system. Plumbing systems to include commercial grade, low-flow toilet fixtures. Hands-free faucets will be supplied by a tankless hot water system. Gray water from roof water collection and snow melt from the Zamboni snow collection will be supplemented by existing water service on the site.
BUILDING COMPONENTS - ELECTRICAL
Generally the pavilion will have fluorescent light fixtures, typically 32 watt, T8 lamps and electronic ballasts for energy efficiency. The Office, Kitchen and Multipurpose Room will have individual controls while the Indoor Skate Change, Washrooms, Ski Wax, and Ski / Bike Storage will have occupancy sensors and switches.
SITE DEVELOPMENT COMPONENT
Access to building is primarily pedestrian from public parking lot on south side of oval that runs along west side of the oval. New access points will introduced along west and south sides of the skating oval to provide outdoor skate change and resting areas. Minimal addition of new landscape material as the site is already heavily treed. The ESSA coaches shack is proposed to be replaced with a new structure to carry the aesthetic of the new pavilion to all buildings on the immediate site area. The electrical site development is mainly site lighting and service vehicle parking. The site lighting will be high efficiency pole mounted lights complete with a photocell control system. There will be electrified parking power on time/temperature controls for City fleet vehicles.
