As a child, my backyard was my playground and the forest was my wonder land.
What the forest created for me was an experience and I realized that most of my memories as a child, even the memories that stick with me now, were created from an experience. I have been trying to explore these memories through some of my most recent art pieces and attempted to create works in which the viewer gained an experience through interaction with them. Having graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Mount Allison University in the year 2013, I saw this competition as a gateway into a new world of design and a great way to express my ideas of creating experience through art. The design I have come up with is based off of a hexagonal shape seen in structures of wasp's nests as well as bee's honeycombs. Bees and wasps use them because a hexagon is the most appropriate geometric form for the maximum use of a given area; minimum amount of wax used to build, maximum storage space. My design is compact, simple, and will function as needed while adding a natural flare to its environmental surroundings. The hexagonal design can also be laid out so that the flooring, the walls and the roofing can be built in panels which can then be easily transported into the woods and easily assembled. The exterior of the building will be sided in eastern cedar shingles to pull in another aspect of natural feel, over time the shingles will become sun worn and turn to a grayish colour. The interior is quite simple at first glance, and it is, but the bedding and storage will be, as seen in the images, adjustable/collapsible into a sitting bench which will create maximum space within the building. Depending on whom the visitors are staying in the building, they will have the room to do yoga or even set up an easel for art work. The prices for this project I wouldn't like to call "fixed," if possible, I would like to use as much local and recycled materials as possible to not only save on costs but to create an environmentally friendly and sustainable structure.
