Solstice Cabin
This pavilion serves as a gathering place for outdoor enthusiasts and adventurers. Designed around the celebration of a midsummer solstice, the project's form is inspired by the sun's relationship with the horizon. Programmatic elements are vertically located according to their function and at what time of day they are utilized. The pavilion incorporates spaces necessary to celebrate midsummer night, view the Aurora Borealis, rest after a long day of skiing, or simply to escape the confines of the city. The circulation elements develop a sense of ritual and pattern when occupying the pavilion. The fire pit platform creates views of the nearby waterbody and rugged terrain and the elegantly sloping roof design is built to collect rain water for a small outdoor shower. The heat from the sauna is utilized to keep the shower's water reservoir from freezing. White pine is used to beautifully clad and frame the deck, sauna, sleeping quarters, and soffits. The skylight serves as a tracker of the sun, creating a diffused spill of light down the wooden soffits. This glow on the underside of the roof will highlight the spaces of certain programs at the moment they are expected to be occupied.
