Bird House Retreat
The Bird House Retreat provides a retreat for two people to study, refresh, and be a part of nature, while accommodating birds' homes. The birdhouses embedded in the walls provide spaces for birds to make their nests. The Bird House Retreat is about people getting to know birds' behaviors, and also about making a coexisting environment. By putting people's and bird's habitats together, it allows an interaction between them, which helps to blur the boundary between humans and nature. A tree house, like a birdhouse, minimizes ground surface area and makes it less territorial towards other animals. It keeps the harmony of nature by reducing the impact of the house.
Form
The faceted exterior walls that compose the formal language, allow varying roof angles to capture sunlight from morning to evening. They also control water runoff to prevent water from getting inside the birdhouses.
Materials / Structure
Weathered wood cladding is used for the exterior to mimic the color of the white pine bark. The interior is lined with white pine panels, giving the room the resemblance of the inner layers of the tree itself. In between these two layers is a wood grid structure, which creates spaces for birds to nest, insulation, space for mechanical equipment, and storage. It also creates logic for the location and sizing of the fenestrations.
