The building is efficient and simple, from the beginning of the construction process to its intended use. Set on piloti's, it hovers above ground, ensuring minimal intervention to the forest bed while eliminating the need for major excavation. Oriented to the south, the cabin takes advantage of the existing views, provides sufficient natural light throughout the year, passive solar heating in the winter, and cross ventilation in the summer. The roof garden creates a microclimate, keeping the building cool in the summer while insulating in the winter.
The construction approach Uses roughsawn dimensional hemlock, and a 4X4 timber structure that receives rigidity through strategically placed sheer walls. The Board and Batten rainscreen and recycled steel for the shutters and the vestibule, are left in their raw form and finish -- materials that morph and respond to their environment over time.
The design is divided in three areas of thermal comfort: the central hearth, a small un-heated vestibule, and a sheltered deck. After a long days work in the woods, the resident arrives through the unheated vestibule before entering the main room equipped with ample storage compartments, two 4' X 8' sleeping platform benches, a hearth, and a single table. The building opens at daylight and acquires energy from the sun, then retreats in the evening via a manual shutter system. To the North of the deck, the source of warmth is piled high, commanding a presence in sight, smell and utility -- woodpile transforms into emblem 4x4x8. The building Shelters the steward to various degrees, while providing a framework to experience the elements at several levels of comfort.
