The Design Concept
Motivated by the issues concerning climate change, through out the design our idea was to create a bus shelter that could be self sufficient and sustainable. The aim of this project is to achieve sustainability by creating a bus shelter for the students of the Loyola campus of Concordia University that uses solar power to produce its own energy for heating and electrical plugs. The concept of the design was to explore the possibilities of a modular shelter, making a new structure that could be expanded if necessary, or even implanted in other parts of the campus. The choice of using a curvilinear structure for the shelter was to create a fun and organic character and break with the seriousness of the space, beneath the curved rooftop a multifunctional area was conceived. The bus shelter not only works as place to wait for the bus but also as protection against the cold weather, as well as a station where students can charge their electronic devices, gather and host fairs on weekends when the space is not being used. The wood as structure and inner lining material, was used for its ability to transmit the sensation of warmth and coziness , work as a noise reduction, be environmentally friendly and completely sustainable. Physically, wood is strong and stiff but, compared to a material like steel, it's also light and flexible. We used glass as the structure closure material as it allows a visual permeability for both the green area surrounding the bus stop, as well as the street. For the roof coverage , Zinc plates were used considering they can offer durability and corrosion resistance; availability and workability; qualification as "Green" Material, since it can be produced from recycled materials taken from demolished or re-roofed structures and it requires less energy for production than other metals.
Description of community consultation
The design of the bus shelter was grounded on the results of interviews held with students of Concordia University, Loyola Campus. The design development sought to meet not only the requirements of the contest but also the aspirations of the students interviewed. Throughout the interview, the intense cold and the absence of sitting space were the most mentioned among the interviewed. Around 50% of the respondents only use the bus during winter, 7,1% during the summer and 14,3% along the year. Regarding the frequency, 41,7% of the students use the bus stop from 3-4 times a week. The results of this interview made possible for us to recognize the points that need improvement, as well as to explore all the possibilities and potentials that the current bus stop has, making it more interactive, as suggested by 58,3% respondents.
